King Coal has been knocked off its throne. Thanks to the increasing development of America’s natural-gas resources, coal is no longer the dominant power source in the U.S.

According to the U.S. Energy Information Agency, natural gas has pulled even with coal as an energy source for power production.

“Power plants fired by natural gas have set a new record by producing as much electricity in the United States as those run by coal, long the nation’s dominant power producer,” writes USA Today.

The news was announced by the U.S. Energy Information Agency this week.

The development of America’s abundant natural-gas reserves has stoked the increased use of cleaner-burning natural-gas for power generation as well as an inexpensive transportation fuel by truck fleets as well as by consumers.
