When the Pickens Plan was introduced in July 2008, we had no idea how the badly the economy would sag, how deep our involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan would continue to be, and how out-of-balance our national checkbook would become.

We thought we had a good idea: Get on domestic energy using every source we have available, and reduce our dependence on OPEC oil.

The thing is, the effect of our national problems on the Pickens Plan has been to make our case that much more compelling!

We are within inches of getting the ball over that elusive legislative goal line in Washington. A hearing was scheduled on the NAT GAS Act (H.R. 1380) for the first week in August, but when the deal was made on the debt ceiling, the House went on its August recess a few days early.

Just getting a hearing scheduled is a big, big step in the process – it is a step we’ve never reached before. That hearing will be rescheduled for September and I need you to reach out to your Representative and Senators while they’re home for recess and tell them they have to get on this bill.

Here’s what you can do:

  • Attend a town hall meeting (if possible, record a video of your interaction and upload it to www.facebook.com/pickensplan
  • Call into a local talk radio show
  • Submit a letter to the editor
  • Arrange a meeting with your Member of Congress or their staff
  • Send your Member of Congress an email at www.pickensplan.com/action
  • Any other creative idea you might have!

I’d love if you’d report back to me at www.pickensplan.com/contact to let me know what you’ve done and what kind of reception you got.

We’ll use that to make sure they stick to what they told you when they get back to Washington after Labor Day.
