The Philadelphia Inquirer – which proudly points out it was founded in 1829 – yesterday published an editorial in glowing support of the NAT GAS Act (H.R. 1380) and the Pickens Plan.

Describing the elements of the Pickens Plan which T. Boone Pickens introduced in 2008, the editorial states:

Pickens’ ideas struck a chord in a nation that watched as terrorism and wars in the oil-rich Middle East drove oil prices to record highs that summer. Making other countries rich at Americans’ expense just made no sense.

“That’s why,” the editorial goes on to say, “Congress should support the [NAT GAS Act] introduced this spring with broad bipartisan support.” The bill currently enjoys the sign-on-the-dotted-line support of over 180 Members of the House as co-sponsors.

The editorial points out that the NAT GAS Act will cost $100,000 per natural gas refueling station, and about $64,000 per 18-wheeler but also says,

“the country stands to benefit even more, especially if the promised savings of 2.5 million barrels of oil a day are realized.”

The editorial concludes with the call for Congress to get moving:

In an era of trillion-dollar deficits, and at a time when energy independence is so closely tied to national security, that’s the kind of savings this nation needs. Congress needs to start thinking about the long haul and get this NAT GAS Act in gear.
