During a joint press conference today in Warsaw featuring President Barack Obama and Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, natural gas was singled out as one of the keys to energy security for both countries.

President Obama said that a wide variety of topics of mutual concern were addressed during the two’s working lunch, including the importance of developing domestic natural gas.

We also discussed the potential for us to cooperate on a wide range of clean energy initiatives, including how we can, in an environmentally sound way, develop natural gas in both the United States and Poland and how we can cooperate on the technology and science around that.

Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk singled out shale gas as one of the keys to Poland’s energy portfolio:

And shale gas — well, for obvious reason, it was a subject of important talks …

Like President Obama, Prime Minister Tusk emphasized the critical importance of developing Poland’s domestic energy resources:

We agreed with President Obama that these undertakings are really an excellent area for Polish-American cooperation. And I am sure that it will bring good results. To the Polish people, American people, it will be both joint business and joint common energy security. And it will also be of use to a united Europe, this cooperation that will also give to Europe more stability in terms of energy.
