A capacity crowd packed Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa Tuesday night, and it wasn’t for an Alabama football game. It was to hear the architect of the Pickens Plan share insights and observations gained from more than 50 years in the energy business.

Boone Pickens told the gathering that eight U.S. presidents have promised to end America’s dangerous dependence on foreign oil, beginning with Richard Nixon and including Barack Obama. Yet the country’s reliance on imported energy has only continued to rise.

Fortunately, recent technological advances have made it possible for America to end this dependence by shifting away from imported oil to domestic natural gas. Pickens pointed out that the U.S. now has the world’s largest proven reserves of clean-burning natural gas, which could well prove to be our best, and only, hope.

“What you don’t want to do is trade off Saudi oil and end up with Chinese batteries,” Pickens told the gathering.

The event was the 39th town hall meeting that Pickens has conducted from coast to coast since launching the Pickens Plan in July 2008.
