An overwhelming number of Americans are dissatisfied with the country’s present energy policy. According to a New York Times/CBS New poll compiled last week, 89 percent of those surveyed believe the United States is too dependent on other countries for its supply of oil. Just 5 percent said the country was not dependent on imported oil.

Overwhelmingly, Americans think the nation needs a fundamental overhaul of its energy policies, and most expect alternative forms to replace oil as a major source within 25 years.

The Times/CBS poll comes on the heels of a report from the Department of Energy’s Energy Information Administration that points out that the U.S. spent almost $1 billion per day in May to import 347 million barrels of oil, i.e., 61 percent of the oil the country needed.
