The day before the opening of the Clean Energy Summit in Las Vegas, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev) extolled the virtues of while we natural gas as reported in an article in the Las Vegas Sun.

Alexandra Berzon wrote that Reid, giving full credit to T. Boone Pickens, described himself as “an absolute convert” to the idea that natural gas can serve as a bridge resource to reduce carbon emissions while the nation develops its renewable resources.

The theme of this year’s Summit is “green jobs.” Berzon pointed out that natural gas as a jobs producer is gaining momentum.

In a speech last month to the Colorado Oil and Gas Association, former Sen. Timothy Wirth told the natural gas industry it “has more to gain, and a greater contribution to make, than any other industry in America or, for that matter, in the world.”

Even the Sierra Club director of global warming, while pointing out that “natural gas is cleaner [than coal or oil] but not clean,” stated that the futures of renewables and natural gas are “intertwined.” Natural gas produces 50 percent less carbon emissions than coal.

Berzon said that Reid talked about H.R. 1845 and S. 1408 – the designations of the NAT GAS Act in the House and the Senate – saying “Reid introduced legislation last month separate from the energy bill to create tax breaks for buying natural-gas-fueled vehicles.”
