T. Boone Pickens was honored last night at the 43rd annual Texas Legislative Conference, in New Braunfels, Texas as the 2008 “Texan of the Year.”

Texas Governor Rick Perry presented the award and said that Boone is “a Texas legend of almost untold stature.”

“The energy plan he laid out … could change the world forever. That’s the type of vision, that’s the type of innovation, that’s the type of leader that the world needs now,” Perry said, according to the Associated Press.

The annual “Texan of the Year” award is “is given to an individual who has most contributed to the progress of Texas” according to the president of the New Braunfels Chamber of Commerce.

The Houston Chronicle reported “Pickens said Thursday that for 40 years he watched presidential candidates make promises to become oil independent but that none had laid out a plan.”

Boone, whose Pickens Plan has received the support of nearly 2 million individuals along with hundreds of elected officials at the federal, state, and local level, said “My dad said a fool with a plan can beat a genius with no plan.”
