The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection announced on Wednesday that it is committing $10 million to incentivize private companies, public agencies, and not-for-profits to purchase cars or light trucks that run on natural gas. The grant program will also cover the conversion or purchase of electric, propane, or other alternative fuel vehicles of any size.

According to Acting Department Secretary Chris Abruzzo, the program will help put new or converted police patrol cars, passenger vehicles, and light-duty trucks on the road.

This new program follows on the heels of another program instituted by the Department of Environmental Protection, which saw Gov. Tom Corbett award more than $6.7 million two weeks ago to 18 companies and local governments that switched to natural gas for buses, garbage trucks and other heavy-duty vehicles.

“Natural gas, particularly from the shale formations here in Pennsylvania, is an abundant, affordable, domestic fuel that is putting this country on a path to energy independence,” said Gov. Corbett.
