Thanks to its lower cost and ready abundance, cleaner burning natural gas has already gained acceptance as a transportation fuel for cars, trucks, and fleets of vehicles.

Now the word from Canada is that locomotives powered by natural gas are being developed by the Canadian National Railway.

Canadian National Railway is testing two natural gas-fired locomotives in Alberta’s oilsands region to see if it’s feasible to switch from diesel to a fuel that’s cheap, plentiful, and relatively clean. The retrofitted diesel locomotives will run along the 480-kilometer corridor between the Edmonton area and Fort McMurray, Alberta.

The switch from more expensive diesel fuel is not only cost effective but it is also decrease health risks.

Energy Conversion, the company that is supplying the conversion, says the move “will cut carbon dioxide emissions by 30 percent and nitrogen oxide emissions by 70 percent.”
