Boone Pickens believes that America can end its dangerous dependence on foreign oil, and he’s got the facts to back up that assertion.

Point number one is the sharp increase in U.S. oil and gas production over the last decade.

“There are 30 U.S. states producing oil and gas, the highest we’ve ever had,” Pickens told CNBC’s “Street Signs” earlier this month.

In addition, Pickens pointed out that the U.S. can replace OPEC oil by accessing substantial amounts of energy in North America.

Pickens has also been a long-supporter of a North American energy alliance to help make the U.S. less reliant on oil from the Persian Gulf. He also said that the U.S. should build the Keystone oil pipeline to help bring more oil in from Canada. “Canada is offering us their oil,” Pickens said.

And thanks to recent technological advances, America’s natural gas resources are second to none.

Dr. Joseph Romm, former Acting Assistant Secretary of Energy for Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy during the Clinton Administration has said: “That’s why it [natural gas] is widely seen, even by groups as green as Greenpeace, as a plausible transition fuel for the next two to three decades as we aggressively ramp up wind, solar PV, concentrated solar thermal, biomass, geothermal, and other ultra-low-carbon energy sources.”
