When it comes to filling up his tank, Jeff Greene doesn’t worry about the price of Middle Eastern oil. That’s because Greene operates South Florida’s first compressed natural gas (CNG) station.

Since the station opened last summer, a gallon of pressurized natural gas has held steady at about $2.19 per gallon — one-third cheaper than regular gasoline.

Remember when gas prices spiked above $4 a gallon? That’s when he and his wife opened Wise Gas Inc. “Nobody even knew what it was,” he says. Thanks to the ever increasing popularity of this cheaper domestic fuel, that story is changing.

“Now it’s getting more and more popular. Our traffic is up, phone calls are up and our sales are up. We’re averaging about a 500 percent increase in sales each year,” Greene says.

Greene’s Wise Gas Inc. is ready to branch out beyond Fort Lauderdale. Greene already got plans to open up a second station in Pompano Beach, and half a dozen more stations are on the drawing board for year’s end.
