T. Boone Pickens has published an essay in the Wichita (Kansas) Eagle in which he takes on U.S. Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-KS) who has come out in opposition to the NAT GAS Act (H.R. 1380) as a subsidy which would have the federal government “pick winners and losers” in fuels.

Pickens points out that Pompeo may not understand the “difference between a targeted incentive and a never-ending subsidy paid by the federal government on a per-gallon, per-kilowatt or per-anything basis.”

The NAT GAS Act provides a tax credit for organizations to purchase vehicles running on domestic natural gas (NGVs) instead of buying vehicles burning imported diesel. Unlike other programs H.R. 1380 expires after five years.

The Pickens Plan has, from its inception, been a plan to reduce our dependence on oil imported from OPEC nations. Boone says in his op-ed that the reason behind supporting the NAT GAS Act “is not to pick one fuel over another. It is to pick the United States over OPEC.”

Given the overwhelming need to reduce our dependence on OPEC oil, Pickens asks:

“Could Pompeo’s opposition to the NAT GAS Act be driven by his campaign donors? The only other possible reason for his opposition to changing the status quo is if he is in favor of maintaining our dependence on OPEC oil, and that can’t be it.”

The essay suggests Pompeo’s constituents “demand an answer to this question: Are you for America, or those who profit from foreign/OPEC oil?”
