In a brief but wide ranging speech that was released Saturday morning, President Obama echoed an important tenet of the Pickens Plan when he presented a long list of domestic energy options that will enable America to end its dangerous dependence on foreign oil once and for all.

Speaking at Allison Transmissions in Indianapolis, the president noted that gas prices are once again reaching all-time highs. “We know there are no quick fixes to this problem,” the president said, but he made it clear that our country’s top energy priority must be ending our addiction to imported crude.

During the 2008 campaign, the president vowed to end our dependence on foreign oil from the Middle East, and in recent months he has stepped up this initiative. On Saturday, the president offered a broad range of options. He noted that domestic oil production has reached its highest level since 2003. He also talked about his administration’s commitment to clean energy and clean energy jobs. And he singled out domestic natural gas as one of the ways America can develop energy security.

” … the only way we can avoid being held hostage to the ups and downs of oil prices is if we reduce our dependence on oil. That means investing in clean, alternative sources of energy, like advanced biofuels and natural gas.  And that means making cars and trucks and buses that use less oil.”
