For over half a century, wildcatters such as Boone Pickens have been drilling gas wells on the Great Plains, and not once has there been a reported instance of contamination of the Ogallala Aquifer. It’s a point that Pickens brings up to counter critics of developing America’s enormous natural gas reserves.

Now the very water being used to drill and develop natural gas wells is being recycled and purified by a Canadian company called Fountain Quail Water Management. Fountain Quail takes the murky, salty water produced by hydraulic fracturing of gas wells and recycles it into pure distilled water that is then used to frack other wells.

Over the past six years, Fountain Quail has recycled more than 11 million barrels of oilfield wastewater from the Barnett Shale in North Texas, and thanks to America’s growing use of domestic natural gas the company is now taking this technology nationwide.

Fountain has announced that it is expanding its operations into Pennsylvania, home of the enormous Marcellus Shale. The company also plans additional operations in the Fayetteville Shale in Arkansas and the Eagle Ford Shale in South Texas.
