On Wednesday, Boone Pickens told writers and editors at Forbes that Washington is getting his message about importing foreign oil and that the American people will soon get the energy plan this country deserves.

“I’ve got Washington in a spot. The American people don’t like OPEC oil any more than I do.”

The legendary energy executive spent much of the week on the road as he continues his crusade to end America’s dangerous addiction to foreign oil. He predicted that Congress will pass an energy bill this year or next, and that it will have incentives for natural gas trucks. Bills currently in the House and Senate include subsidies of $65,000 per vehicle for natural gas-powered trucks, which can cost about $100,000.

He is indeed pushing his plan like it’s a crusade. He figures the only way we can truly wean ourselves from the oil we now buy from “the enemy,” in his words – meaning OPEC – is by using the nation’s huge reserves of natural gas for more than just generating electricity. “It’s clean, it’s cheap, and it’s ours,” says Pickens.
