The Energy Council, a consortium of energy-producing U.S. states and Canadian Provinces, has issued a resolution calling on Congress to “favorably consider the provisions of [the NAT GAS Act] H.R. 1835 and S. 1048, broaden support for alternative fuel tax credits, and provide support for natural gas fueled vehicle projects, as well as long-term, consistent research and development of natural gas vehicles.”

The resolution states,

As the first decade of the 21st century concludes, the Western Hemisphere finds itself with an expanding inventory of conventional and alternative energy resources capable of providing increasingly plentiful energy.

For example, estimates of North American natural gas reserves, made accessible by hydraulic fracturing have increased dramatically.

Recent studies have suggested there are as many as 8,000 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of natural gas reserves in place in North America of which 4,000 tcf is available for development with current technology.

The Energy Council directed that the resolution, which was adopted by unanimous vote, be distributed to

“the President of the United States of America, the Senate Majority Leader of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the Energy Council’s Congressional delegations, as well as the Energy Ministers of the Energy Council’s member Canadian Provinces.

The NAT GAS Act has 137 bipartisan co-sponsors in the U.S. House and has the support of Republican and Democratic Senators from all regions in the U.S. Senate.
