The Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) announced the signing of four contracts to purchase up to 815 megawatts of renewable wind energy from American wind farms. The federal utility has set a goal for itself of having more than 50 percent of its power generation come from non-carbon emitting sources. TVA’s renewable energy portfolio now includes 5,095 megawatts from wind, solar, hydro, and methane sources.

“Wind power is a clean and limitless source of energy that directly enhances TVA’s mission of environmental stewardship,” said TVA Executive Vice President Van Wardlaw in a statement released Thursday. “When we look at all the options for renewable sources, it makes sense for TVA to invest in wind energy.”

Chartered by the federal government in 1933, the utility signed contracts with affiliates of Invenergy Wind to provide up to 350 megawatts from energy centers in McLean County and Henry County, Illinois. Both begin in January 2012. TVA also contracted with CPV Renewable Energy Co. for up to 165 megawatts from a project in Gray County, Kansas, and with Iberdrola Renewables Inc. for up to 300 megawatts from a project in Illinois.
