On Friday, President Obama announced $2.3 billion in tax credits for more than 180 American manufacturers of clean energy technologies, “companies that build wind turbines and produce solar panels and assemble cutting edge batteries,” he said.

His stated goals are many: to better the environment, to give a much-needed boost to the country’s manufacturing sector, to double the amount of renewable power used in the U.S. in the next three years, and to build a robust clean energy sector that will create the jobs of the future.

President Obama made a special point of emphasizing how the lack of an energy plan has jeopardized not just America’s economic well-being but its national security as well:

“It’s clear why such an effort is so important.  Building a robust clean energy sector is how we will create the jobs of the future: jobs that pay well and can’t be outsourced. But it’s also how we will reduce our dangerous dependence on foreign oil, a dependence that endangers our economy and our security.”
