What’s the nation’s largest retailer? What’s the nation’s largest single civilian employer? Which retail company has over 7,800 of its own trucks? Sam answer: Wal-Mart.

Last fall, T. Boone Pickens went to Bentonville, Arkansas to meet with the chairman of Wal-Mart to talk about having Wal-Mart take a few of its heavy trucks – the 18-wheelers that go from distribution centers to retail stores and back – which are running on imported diesel to run on domestic natural gas.

Wal-Mart is moving ahead on just such a test, according to this report in the Dallas Morning News.

Wal-Mart Stores Inc. on Monday put a new spotlight on natural gas-powered vehicles – this time on trucks.

The world’s largest retailer said it plans to test four models of heavy-duty commercial trucks powered by either hybrid engines or alternative fuels.

Wal-Mart has been a leader in becoming more environmentally friendly. Two stores are being run as tests to see how little energy some of their massive stores can use.

According to the Morning News:

Wal-Mart, which operates one of the largest private truck fleets in the world, said the new trucks are part of its efforts to reduce its environmental footprint.
