Under federal law, Americans are permitted to form political organizations which are separate and apart from any campaign. These are called “527” organizations—named for the section of the federal tax code which authorizes them.

Since July 8, when I started traveling around the country talking about the need to end America’s dependence on foreign oil, there have been folks who have wondered whether I am or will be involved in the political campaigns which end on November 4.

The answer is: No.

I am not donating money directly to any Presidential campaign. And I am not donating any money to a “527” organization.

I am not involved in guiding, helping, steering, directing or having any other type of influence over, or connection with, any organization running ads in favor of a candidate or against a candidate.

I have met with both Sen. Barack Obama and Sen. John McCain. I had the same conversation with each of them. I have met with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NEV). In fact, Harry Reid specifically asked me if I were going to be involved in this campaign and I told him that the biggest threat America faces is our dependence on foreign oil. To be successful I had to be non-partisan, and I would be.

Sen. Reid then told his Democratic Leadership that I am a tough opponent, but I am an honorable man, and if I told him I was out of the campaign then he would take me at my word.

America is standing on a cliff on this energy deal. If we fall off that cliff, America’s economy will be in the pocket of foreign countries—some of them are our enemies. I think that’s a good enough reason to focus on our energy future, and let the political campaign take care of itself.
